Background

Shapeshifters is an ancient mythological creature in Celtic Lore. Gene Rodenberry borrowed from Celtic mythology for the initiation of a shapeshifter character (for good or evil) in Star Trek. As the actors on stage become the characters of the written story, they become the Shapeshifters before your eyes.

The Irish American Heritage Center has hosted Irish Theatre since 1987. The theatre company began with the devoted efforts of Mary O'Reilly and Kay & Michael Shevlin. As the building renovation crews restored the facility, the thespians recruited fellow theatre lovers and began bringing Irish history, folklore, and much loved writings to the stage.

In 1999, the theatre company took the next step forward with the American Premier presentation of "Monday Night in a Country Town", an original play by Dublin author, Tom O'Brien. For the first time, they entered the "Acting Irish International Theatre Festival" to bring this dramatic story to a new audiance.

For the first time, the theatre company took to the road and toured to four summer festivals.

The season moved forward with the presentation of the first full length musical,"My Home, My Heart, My Ireland". This original show and much of its' memorable music was written by local author, Carol J. Kearney. Audiances laughed, cried, sang, and loved as the travelers and locals at the "Rose and Dragon" Pub shared their experiences and their hearts. This production initiated a joint effort of the Theatre Company, the Heritage Center Choir, and dancers from Rince Na Cara and Mullane Dance school, based at the Heritage Center. Members and students joined the cast of performers.

Shapeshifters Theatre Company continues to build on the tradition of Irish Theatre and expands the presentation of established and new works. We welcome you to join us.
